An unusually elegant three medallion Khaden rug with white field and black design. The medallions are created with interconnected swastikas, an ancient symbol connected with the Buddha which in Tibet also connotes eternity. The strong angular geometry of the three medallions, along with the knots of eternity in the border contrast with the movement of the flowing fabric, possibly Khataks that border the carpet. Tibetan wool and natural dyes. Early 20th century, possibly the 19th.
