These paintings look at the ordinary everyday objects of Tibetan society that were being made and used only fifty years ago. Most of these traditional artifacts which possess a sublime and uniquely Tibetan amalgam of form, function and ingenuity are being replaced with soul-less mass produced goods or greatly inferior replicas of the authentic items. I believe that the objects of a society tell the story of that culture, especially in the case of a traditional society, where they were almost always handmade, one piece at a time and customized by regional style, maker and customer. Whether it be a unique lock and key mechanism, a pair of decorated boots or a set of doors, the manufacture of these items by and for the society ensured a completed circle from aesthetics, resource, production and worldview Return to GALLERIES
