This series of paintings looks at different aspects of Buddhism- the system of philosophy and spiritual practices that reshaped Tibet a thousand years ago......transforming an outward looking and technologically advanced country into a society that directed all it's energies into spiritual growth. No matter how difficult a plight we find ourselves in today, few Tibetans would refute the advances in philosophy and metaphysics that was achieved by Tibetan society and the relative peace enjoyed by their nation over the last thousand years. Buddhist concepts such as the self-actualization of 'conditionless compassion' and the belief in the ultimate non-realty of the perceived world are pulling contemporary Tibetan society apart in how it deals with it's political reality today, and are therefore at the heart of an inner moral and ethical debate for most Tibetans. My interest in exploring some of these core Buddhist ideas by re-imagining them in contemporary and sometimes more universal expressions than through purely Tibetan visual conventions, is to see if they could co-exist with today's prevalent global cultures, and if so, then what impact one can have on the other.
